CHAPTER 20

Since it was obvious that we weren’t welcome at Dick’s place, we decided to return home. When Gran found us gone, she would probably call her daughter, and the latter would tell her all about Dick’s scandalous behavior and make sure that she knew what kind of person she was staying with. However, when we finally did arrive home, it was clear that all communication between Gran and the rest of the family had been severed.

“She hasn’t called, and she won’t pick up her phone!” Marge cried the moment we entered the house.

“She’s staying at Dick Bernstein’s place,” Harriet said.

“But Dick has kicked us out,” said Brutus.

“He doesn’t like cats,” I explained.

“He’s not a very nice man,” Dooley added.

“Dick Bernstein! What is she doing there!” Marge cried. She seemed overwrought, and I was starting to appreciate that Gran leaving home was probably a bigger issue than I had thought. Clearly, the fact that she had left home had caused a sort of panic.

“I told you that she would be fine,” said Tex. He stood behind his wife and had placed his hands on her shoulders in a reassuring gesture. “She needs a little time to cool off, that’s all. She’ll be back before you know it.” The smile on his face told us that he didn’t seem to mind that his mother-in-law had left home as much as his wife did.

“You should never have installed that gate,” said Marge.

“I didn’t want her to fall down the stairs and break her neck,” said Tex. He sighed a sort of wistful sigh, and the look on his face clearly belied his words. If it had been up to him, he wouldn’t have installed any gate at all, so the idea must have come from Marge. “And I didn’t even get started on those bed rails yet.”

“That would have been the last straw. We probably would never see her again.”

“She’ll be back,” said Tex sadly. “I can’t imagine she will be staying with Dick permanently. And besides, he wouldn’t like it either.”

“She wants to go and stay with Scarlett,” said Harriet.

“Scarlett lives in an apartment,” said Marge as she bit her lip. “Imagine if she starts sleepwalking there. She’s liable to fall out of a window.”

“Imagine that,” said Tex wistfully.

“We have to tell Odelia. She can go and talk to her and convince her to return home,” said Marge. “She won’t listen to us, of course. She considers us the enemy now.”

“After all that we did for her,” said Tex, shaking his head.

Marge glanced at me. “Max, maybe you can talk some sense into her? Or you, Dooley? I know she listens to you guys.”

“We’ve been kicked out of Dick’s house,” I reminded her. “He threatened us with a knife and said that if we ever set foot in his house again, he will feed us to the dogs.”

“I think he said hogs,” Brutus corrected me.

“Dogs or hogs, it’s not a fate I would enjoy.”

“He had a very big knife,” said Dooley, and shivered at the recollection.
