CHAPTER 20
Since it was obvious that we werenât welcome at Dickâs place, we decided to return home. When Gran found us gone, she would probably call her daughter, and the latter would tell her all about Dickâs scandalous behavior and make sure that she knew what kind of person she was staying with. However, when we finally did arrive home, it was clear that all communication between Gran and the rest of the family had been severed.
âShe hasnât called, and she wonât pick up her phone!â Marge cried the moment we entered the house.
âSheâs staying at Dick Bernsteinâs place,â Harriet said.
âBut Dick has kicked us out,â said Brutus.
âHe doesnât like cats,â I explained.
âHeâs not a very nice man,â Dooley added.
âDick Bernstein! What is she doing there!â Marge cried. She seemed overwrought, and I was starting to appreciate that Gran leaving home was probably a bigger issue than I had thought. Clearly, the fact that she had left home had caused a sort of panic.
âI told you that she would be fine,â said Tex. He stood behind his wife and had placed his hands on her shoulders in a reassuring gesture. âShe needs a little time to cool off, thatâs all. Sheâll be back before you know it.â The smile on his face told us that he didnât seem to mind that his mother-in-law had left home as much as his wife did.
âYou should never have installed that gate,â said Marge.
âI didnât want her to fall down the stairs and break her neck,â said Tex. He sighed a sort of wistful sigh, and the look on his face clearly belied his words. If it had been up to him, he wouldnât have installed any gate at all, so the idea must have come from Marge. âAnd I didnât even get started on those bed rails yet.â
âThat would have been the last straw. We probably would never see her again.â
âSheâll be back,â said Tex sadly. âI canât imagine she will be staying with Dick permanently. And besides, he wouldnât like it either.â
âShe wants to go and stay with Scarlett,â said Harriet.
âScarlett lives in an apartment,â said Marge as she bit her lip. âImagine if she starts sleepwalking there. Sheâs liable to fall out of a window.â
âImagine that,â said Tex wistfully.
âWe have to tell Odelia. She can go and talk to her and convince her to return home,â said Marge. âShe wonât listen to us, of course. She considers us the enemy now.â
âAfter all that we did for her,â said Tex, shaking his head.
Marge glanced at me. âMax, maybe you can talk some sense into her? Or you, Dooley? I know she listens to you guys.â
âWeâve been kicked out of Dickâs house,â I reminded her. âHe threatened us with a knife and said that if we ever set foot in his house again, he will feed us to the dogs.â
âI think he said hogs,â Brutus corrected me.
âDogs or hogs, itâs not a fate I would enjoy.â
âHe had a very big knife,â said Dooley, and shivered at the recollection.
